Finance Minister Chatib Basri said the estimated inflation rate for the end of this year would likely achieve the target of 5.5 percent set by the government, as the February inflation rate was recorded as standing at 0.26 percent, which was quite low.

“Alhamdulillah [praise God], the February inflation rate was good, so the year-on-year [yoy] inflation could reach 7.75 percent,” he said in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Chatib said that, with such a low inflation rate, the government’s inflation target of 5.5 percent for 2014 would likely be achieved by the end of the year.

“Inflation rates in the future will be still in line with assumptions,” he said.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) on Monday announced that the inflation rate in February stood at 0.26 percent due to the high price of processed food and beverages. With the month’s inflation rate, calendar year inflation for January-February this year stood at 1.33 percent and 7.75 percent yoy.

According to the BPS, processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco contributed 0.08 percent to the February inflation rate, while staple foods contributed 0.04 percent to the month’s inflation.
