Judge Datuk Noor Azian binti Shaari of the Malaysia Shah Alam High Court has sentenced a Malaysian couple to death for the negligence and ill-treatment that led to the death of their Indonesian maid Siti Komariah.
The pair, identified as Fong Kong Meng and Teoh Chong Yen, were found guilty of failing to provide enough food or medical assistance to the ailing Siti during her almost two years of service.
“The judge found the couple guilty of failing to provide enough food and for mistreating her when she was working for them. They are therefore sentenced to hang,” the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia said in a press release on Friday.
The case was originally uncovered by hospital staff who found Siti, who was hospitalized in 2011, to be in a poor condition and badly bruised, she weighed only 26 kilograms on admission.
Siti, originally from Banyuwangi, East Java, made her way to Malaysia in 2009 through PT Mardell Mitra Global. She worked for the couple from her first day in Malaysia.
The Indonesian Embassy organized the repatriation of Siti’s body to her hometown in 2011 and it also extracted her unpaid wages from her employers.
